I’ve always been into cars, and in 2019 that turned into sim racing. It’s been one of my biggest hobbies ever since.

From arcade to sim

I started with Forza Horizon 4 on a Logitech G29. After trying Live for Speed and Dirt Rally 2.0, I moved over to proper sims, since they feel much closer to driving a real car.

Today I mostly drift in Assetto Corsa and do rally or just mess around in BeamNG.drive.

My setup

  • Wheelbase: Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm)
  • Pedals: load cell brake
  • Handbrake: Thrustmaster TSS
  • Shifter: SHH shifter
  • Rig: GT Omega Titan
  • VR: PlayStation VR2

VR makes a huge difference, especially when drifting. Being able to look into the corner makes it so much easier to judge angle and distance, but it comes at the cost of performance.

Recreating Virsbo

My biggest sim racing project is recreating Surahammar Municipality in Assetto Corsa, and above all Virsbo, a small town in the municipality. I’m building it in Blender, and the goal is to be able to drift the streets of Virsbo.

The track is far from complete and is not being actively worked on, since I don’t really have time and it’s a tedious process. But so far building a map has taught me a bit about 3D modeling, and how much work goes into the tracks you usually just drive.
